Weekly bulletin iteka n’ijambo n°514

This bulletin presents the human rights situation in Burundi during the week of February 16 to 22, 2026. In this report, the Iteka League also examines the political, security, judicial, and governance context. It also analyzes illustrative cases of violations of civil and political rights, economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as category-specific rights.

The human rights violations observed and documented by the Iteka League are as follows for this period: at least 15 people killed, including 13 bodies found and 2 cases of infanticide, 3 cases of abduction and/or people reported missing, as well as 5 journalists arbitrarily arrested.

Among the victims, 5 women and 2 girls were killed, 3 girls were abducted, 1 female journalist was arbitrarily arrested, and 3 children were killed. Members of the ruling CNDD-FDD party Imbonerakure, SNR agents, police officers, and administrators are accused of being the main alleged perpetrators of these human rights violations. Read more
