Weekly bulletin Iteka n’Ijambo n°533

This bulletin presents the human rights situation in Burundi during the week of June 29 through July 5, 2026. In this report, the Iteka League also examines the political, security, and governance contexts. It further analyzes incidents illustrating violations of civil and political rights, economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as rights specific to certain groups.

The human rights violations observed and documented by the Iteka League for this period are as follows: at least 7 people killed, including 4 whose bodies were found and 2 others killed in incidents of domestic violence; 1 person abducted; 4 victims of gender-based violence, including 2 rapes of minor girls; and 100 people arbitrarily arrested.

Among the victims are 4 women who were killed 2 of whom were killed by their husbands and 2 young girls who were raped.

Members of the Imbonerakure militia affiliated with the ruling CNDD-FDD party, agents of the SNR, police officers, and government officials are accused of being the main alleged perpetrators of these human rights violations. Read more
