This bulletin provides an overview of the human rights situation in Burundi during the week of April 20–26, 2026. In this report, the Iteka League examines the political, judicial, economic, and humanitarian contexts. It also analyzes incidents illustrating violations of civil and political rights that occurred during the week.
The human rights violations observed and documented by the Iteka League are as follows: at least 6 people killed, including 1 body found dead; 2 people subjected to cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment; and 4 people subjected to gender-based violence, including 2 minor girls who were raped and 2 men who were victims of domestic violence.
Among the 12 victims are 2 women killed, 1 woman subjected to cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, and 2 minor girls raped.
The main suspects in these violations are administrative officials, police officers, military personnel, and young Imbonerakure members of the ruling party, the CNDD-FDD. Read more
