Weekly bulletin Iteka n’Ijambo n°522

This bulletin presents the human rights situation in Burundi during the week of April 13 to 19, 2026. In this report, the Iteka League also examines the security, judicial, governance, and economic context. It also analyzes illustrative cases of civil and political rights violations that marked this week.

The human rights violations observed and documented by the Iteka League are as follows: at least 6 people killed, including 3 bodies found dead, 3 people subjected to inhuman or degrading treatment, 2 minor girls victims of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and 1 person kidnapped. It should be noted that one person reappeared a few days after being kidnapped. Of the 10 victims, 3 are children, including two little girls, and 1 new born.

The main suspects of these violations are administrative officers, police officers, military personnel, and young Imbonerakure members of the ruling party, CNDD-FDD. Read more
