This bulletin provides an overview of the human rights situation in Burundi for the week from August 24 to 30, 2026. In this report, the Iteka League also assesses the political, security, and governance context. It provides an analysis of incidents illustrating violations of civil and political rights, as well as socio-economic and cultural rights that marked this period.
The human rights violations observed and recorded by the Iteka League are as follows: at least 8 people were killed, including 3 bodies found dead, 1 case of infanticide, and a child who died due to a crocodile attack. There was 1 case of GBV involving a minor girl who was raped, 1 person subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment, and 6 persons who were victims of arbitrary arrests, including 5 soldiers and 1 police officer.
The main suspects in these violations are police officers, young Imbonerakure associated with the ruling party, the CNDD-FDD. Read more
