REPORT OF THE BURUNDIAN LEAGUE OF HUMAN RIGHTS “ITEKA” ON THE SITUATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN BURUNDI DURING THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY 2026

This monthly report for February 2026 is the result of a summary of the Iteka n’ Ijambo weekly bulletins from number 512 to 515. This report analyzes the human rights situation. It reviews civil and political rights as well as economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as category-specific rights, particularly the rights of the child. The present report concludes with a conclusion and recommendations.

Thus, the situation of civil and political rights for the period covered by this report is illustrated as follows: 35 people were killed, including 23 corpses; 4 people were tortured; 7 people were abducted; 4 people were victims of GBV, including 3 girls who were raped, all under 18 years old.

Among the victims are 11 women and girls killed, 3 women and girls abducted, 3 girls raped, 1 woman victim of domestic violence, 1 female journalist arbitrarily arrested and detained, and 11 children killed.

Imbonerakure, police officers, administrative agents, and the military, as well as other people near members of the ruling party CNDD-FDD, are pointed out as the presumed perpetrators of most of these human rights violations and killings. Read the report
