Weekly bulletin Iteka n’ijambo n°527

This bulletin presents the human rights situation in Burundi during the week of May 18–24, 2026. In this report, the Iteka League examines the political, security, judicial, humanitarian, governance, and economic contexts. It also analyzes incidents illustrating violations of civil and political rights that occurred this week, as well as violations of social, economic, and cultural rights and the rights of specific groups.

The human rights violations observed and documented by the Iteka League are as follows: at least 5 people killed, including 4 bodies found dead; 1 person subjected to cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment; 5 victims of gender-based violence, including 2 minor girls who were raped and 2 men and 1 woman who were victims of domestic violence.

The main suspects in these violations are administrative officials, police officers, and young Imbonerakure members of the ruling party, the CNDD-FDD. Read more
