This bulletin presents the human rights situation in Burundi during the week of May 11–17, 2026. In this report, the Iteka League also examines the governance, security, and humanitarian contexts. It further analyzes incidents illustrating violations of civil and political rights that occurred during this week.
The allegations of human rights violations observed and documented by the Iteka League are as follows: at least 6 people killed, including 5 bodies found, 1 man who was a victim of sexual violence, 3 cases of torture, 2 persons who were victims of arbitrary arrest, and 3 people wounded by police shootings.
Among these victims are 2 women killed, 1 woman tortured, and 1 child killed.
The main suspects in these violations are administrative officials, police officers, military personnel, and young Imbonerakure members of the ruling party, the CNDD-FDD. Read more
