Between January and February 2025, Burundi experienced a tumultuous situation, marked by serious human rights violations attributed to state agents or their representatives and other individuals, in a climate of impunity. Despite civil society’s attempts to denounce these abuses, the government seemed indifferent to calls for justice and thorough investigations. The Iteka League, closely monitoring the situation, recorded 69 people killed, including 51 men, 18 women, of whom 15 were children. The province of Gitega was the most affected, with 28 killed, followed by Bujumbura with 16 victims, Burunga with 11, and finally Butanyerera and Buhumuza, which had 7 victims each. Read the report
