This bulletin presents the situation of human rights in Burundi during the week of July 20 to 26, 2026. In this report, the Iteka League also looks at the security, political, governance, and humanitarian context. It also analyzes illustrative cases of violations of civil and political rights that marked this week.
The human rights violations observed and documented by the Iteka League are as follows: at least 7 people killed, including 3 bodies found dead, 2 of them newborns. 2 children died following a grenade explosion, 1 person electrocuted on a public street by an electric pole. 3 gender-based violence (GBV) cases, including 2 rape victims, and 3 people subjected to arbitrary arrests.
The main suspects in these violations are administrative agents, police officers, intelligence service agents, and young Imbonerakure members of the ruling party, the CNDD-FDD. Read more
