On June 18, 2020, \u00c9variste Ndayishimiye assumed the presidency of the Republic of Burundi with a strong pledge: to turn the page on past crises, restore trust, strengthen good governance, and place citizens back at the heart of public action. Six years later, the record presents a mixed picture. Burundi has experienced relative institutional stability; certain economic and social initiatives have been launched, and several positive developments can be noted. Notably, economic growth has resumed, and efforts have been made to combat corruption and improve governance.<\/p>\n
However, these advances coexist with a worrying reality regarding human rights and civil liberties. Consolidated data from the Ligue Iteka for the period from July 2020 to June 2026 records 7,967 allegations of human rights violations, including: 3,157 people killed (with 1,739 bodies recovered); 283 people abducted and reported missing; 348 cases of torture; 830 victims of gender-based violence over 80% of which involved sexual violence and 3,349 arbitrary arrests. These figures constitute neither an exhaustive tally of all violations committed in the country nor a judicial verdict. In a climate marked by fear, limited access to information, and the risk of reprisals, the actual number of violations could be far higher than the documented cases.
