On the eve of the 2025-2026 school year, the Government of Burundi allocated funding for its “Zero Poorly Seated Children” Program, which aims to ensure that no student is forced to study in undignified conditions by providing schools with a sufficient number of desks to achieve the goal of two students per desk. The implementation of the Program has experienced significant delays. Manufacturing workshops are now operational in several communes, and the first results are expected during the 2026-2027 school year.<\/p>\n
In many primary schools, students have long attended classes in extremely precarious conditions: sitting on bricks or directly on the ground, standing during lessons, or crammed four or five to a desk designed for two.
