Quarterly Report on the Human Rights Situation in Burundi from April to June 2025

This report on the human rights situation in Burundi from April to June 2025 examines the political, judicial, governance, security, and human rights context. It also covers civil and political rights, as well as categorical rights. This report concludes with a conclusion and recommendations.

Thus, the human rights situation was reported as follows: at least 91 people killed, including 59 bodies found; 34 victims of GBV, including 22 cases of SGBV perpetrated against minors; 21 people tortured; 23 people abducted and/or disappeared; and 43 people arbitrarily arrested.

Among the 213 victims are 145 men, 32 women, 30 girls, and 6 boys, including 22 minor girls who were raped.

Members of political parties were not spared either: 7 members of the Burundi bwa bose coalition were victims of torture (3) and arrest (4). 2 activists from the CDP party and one member of RANAC were arrested. 20 members of the CNL party, Rwasa faction, and 3 UPRONA activists were arrested (2) and tortured (1). 20 members of the CNDD-FDD were victims of arrest and torture. It should be noted that these individuals are known as former members of the FNL (current CNL).

Members of the Imbonerakure militia, administrative officials, SNR agents, military personnel, and police officers are implicated as the alleged perpetrators of most of these human rights violations and murders. Read the full report
